Our activities are organized at the Community Center in Barrio La Honda, Medellin. It serves as a safe haven for children and young people in the neighborhood, providing a space for their development and self-expression.
"Un Paso Adelante" is akin to a second home for many kids. It's a place where they share stories and emotions, enjoy meals, watch movies, and learn new things. It's a sanctuary where they can be themselves without fear of judgment.
We have a cooking project where children and teenagers participate in cooking lessons and receive training on setting up an independent business. All the meals they prepare are shared and consumed by children and teenagers from the neighborhood.
Through our program, participants learn how to cook healthy meals, provide serving assistance, and initiate their own business ventures. They prepare food for up to 60 children in their neighborhood.
Eight teenagers, aged between 11 and 15, are part of a dance group led by professional dancer and teacher Ferney Vasquez, known as Artemix. They train twice a week to prepare for competitions, allowing them to express themselves through the art of dance. The group is divided into two based on their levels of experience and talent. These kids participate in tournaments held throughout the city.
Teenagers aged 14 to 18 attend barber classes twice a week, covering practical and theoretical lessons. They learn the basics of barbering, and if they demonstrate mastery of fundamental skills and show motivation, they have the opportunity to advance to an officially registered barber training program to obtain their official certificate. Professional barber and barbershop owner Yonathan Gil leads all classes.
We provide children and young people with high-quality pairs of shoes. Beyond the physical benefits for their growing bodies, new shoes also instill self-confidence, demonstrating to the children that they are valued even amidst challenging circumstances. We conduct door-to-door visits to identify children in need of decent shoes. Once we have gathered all the necessary information, we set a date for the children to come and claim their shoes, ensuring proper fitting.
Children living in self-improvised houses, primarily made of wood and plastic, are provided with sleeping bags. These houses are often insufficiently resistant to the cold and rain, especially during the rainy season. By providing sleeping bags, we aim to offer a small measure of comfort and contribute to a better night's sleep, recognizing that this is one of the most critical aspects of their basic needs.
